Who sinned? · A question on the road John 9:1–7 · the disciples' question and the healing 9:1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 9:2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 9:4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 9:6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 9:7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. Reading notes The disciples offer two possible culprits. Jesus rejects both and speaks of the works of God to be revealed in this person. Then the healing takes place. This is an account of a sign and of Jesus' mission; its theological meaning remains part of the scene. A present-day question about access to help sits beside it: how long must someone explain why they are in trouble before help begins? When money, research and computing resources are allocated, that question concerns the people making the decisions. The text does not design a healthcare system for us, but it returns our attention to the person being discussed. King James Version, public domain. Seven consecutive verses are reproduced without cuts; the dispute about the healing continues through the rest of the chapter. The references to the works of God, the one who sent Jesus and the light of the world are retained. The card title is editorial.
