Letters about a Garden The letters had neither greetings nor signatures. One reported that the shrub by the north wall had frozen again. The other asked whether the roots were still intact. Elias laid the letters out by year. One hand was small, its lines crowded together; the other filled the page. Every spring, the writer of the small letters cut away the dead branches and waited for new shoots. His correspondent advised planting something else there. The last envelope was thicker than the others. It held seeds and a note in the larger hand: “These should take by the wall.” On the back was a drawing of a frame for a winter cover. The dimensions had been corrected several times. Among the earlier letters, Elias found a drawing with the same measurements. The cover would fit the old shrub.
