Musa · Where the two seas meet

Quran 18:60–82

And Musa said to his young companion: “I will not cease travelling until I reach the meeting place of the two seas, even if I must go on for a long time.”

When they reached the place where the two met, they forgot their fish, and it found its way into the sea as though through a passage.

When they had gone further, he said to his companion: “Bring us our food. We have grown weary on this journey.”

He said: “Do you remember when we took shelter by the rock? I forgot about the fish. Only Satan made me forget to mention it. It found its way into the sea in a wondrous manner.”

He said: “That is what we were looking for.” And they returned, retracing their steps.

And they found one of Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and whom We had taught knowledge from Us.

Musa said to him: “May I follow you so that you may teach me some of what you have been taught as right guidance?”

He said: “You will not be able to remain patient with me.

And how will you be patient with what you have not encompassed in knowledge?”

He said: “If Allah wills, you will find me patient, and I will not disobey your command.”

He said: “If you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I begin to speak to you about it myself.”

And they set out. When they boarded a vessel, he made a hole in it. Musa said: “Have you made a hole in it to drown those aboard? You have done a grave thing!”

He said: “Did I not say that you would not be able to remain patient with me?”

He said: “Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me with hardship in my undertaking.”

And they set out. When they met a boy, he killed him. Musa said: “Have you killed a pure soul, not in retribution for another soul? You have done an intolerable thing!”

He said: “Did I not tell you that you would not be able to remain patient with me?”

He said: “If I ask you about anything after this, no longer keep company with me. You have already received from me a reason to do so.”

And they set out. When they came to the people of a settlement, they asked them for food, but they refused to receive them as guests. There they found a wall about to collapse, and he set it upright. Musa said: “If you had wished, you could have taken payment for this.”

He said: “This is the parting between me and you. I will tell you the explanation of what you could not bear patiently.

As for the vessel, it belonged to poor people who worked at sea. I wished to damage it: behind them was a king who seized every vessel by force.

As for the boy, his parents were believers. We feared that he would burden them with disobedience and unbelief.

And we wished their Lord to replace him for them with one better in purity and nearer in mercy.

As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city. Beneath it was a treasure belonging to them, and their father was righteous. Your Lord wished them to reach maturity and bring out their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do this of my own decision. This is the explanation of what you could not bear patiently.”

Reading notes

Moses objects to the damaged boat, the killing of the youth, and work performed without payment. Explanation is delayed until the parting, so the reader initially knows no more than the companion and follows his objections.

The passage calls the teacher a servant of God granted mercy and knowledge; the name Khiḍr belongs to its interpretive tradition. The closing statement that the deeds were not performed on his own initiative belongs to this particular narrative. It does not authorize an ordinary person to justify harm by claiming secret knowledge.
